The holidays are coming, and for a lot of adults on your list, cannabis makes a more thoughtful gift than another candle or bottle of wine. It’s personal, there’s something for every taste, and if you live in Marin, you don’t have to drive into the city to pick it up.
Here’s how to gift cannabis the right way in California, plus gift ideas for everyone from first-timers to longtime connoisseurs.
Is It Legal to Gift Cannabis in California?
Yes, with a few rules. Under California law, an adult 21 or older can give cannabis to another adult 21 or older, as long as:
- No money changes hands. A gift has to be a gift. You can’t be paid back for it.
- It stays within personal possession limits, which are up to 28.5 grams of cannabis or 8 grams of concentrate.
- The person receiving it is 21 or older. Never gift cannabis to anyone under 21.
A few things to avoid:
- Don’t mail or ship it. Sending cannabis through the U.S. Postal Service or a shipping carrier is illegal, even within California.
- Don’t take it across state lines, including to family celebrations outside California.
How Holiday Delivery Works in Marin
The easiest way to give cannabis is to order it for yourself, have it delivered to your own address, and wrap it up. That’s because our drivers check ID at the door, and the person who placed the order needs to be there to receive it. We can’t hand an order to someone else as a surprise.
If you’d rather the order go straight to them, they’ll need to place it in their own name and be home with their ID when it arrives.

Cannabis Gift Ideas for Everyone on Your List
For the Curious First-Timer
Low-dose gummies are the easiest way to start. They’re portioned, simple to dose, and don’t need any equipment. Browse our edibles and look for lower-milligram options. Include a note that says: start small and wait at least an hour before having more.
For the Host Who Has Everything
A pack of pre-rolls makes an easy host gift for a holiday party with friends who enjoy cannabis. Ask first, and keep it for adults only.
For the Home Cook
Infused chocolates and other edibles are a good fit for anyone who loves treats. For the ambitious baker, pair a gift with our cannabis cookies recipe for beginners or our guide to cannabis sugar.
For the Person Who Wants to Unwind
Tinctures give a measured dose with a dropper, and topicals like balms and lotions are a popular part of a relaxing evening routine. Both are easy to tuck into a stocking.
For the Connoisseur
Top-shelf flower or a concentrate from a craft producer they haven’t tried yet. Ask one of our budtenders what’s new, or browse the daily deals for something special at a better price.
For the Gear Lover
Not every gift has to contain cannabis. A quality grinder, a rolling kit or a new vaporizer battery makes a useful gift on its own. Browse our accessories.
Gifting Etiquette
- Ask first. Not everyone uses cannabis, and some people have work, health or family reasons to avoid it.
- Keep it in the original packaging. Product packaging includes the dose, ingredients and lab-tested potency, which matter to the person using it.
- Add dosing guidance, especially for edibles and especially for newer consumers.
- Store it safely. Cannabis gifts belong somewhere kids and pets can’t reach, before and after they’re opened.
